Emission Control Areas (ECAs) are one of the most effective ways to drastically reduce emissions. Currently the designation of a Mediterranean ECA is under consideration and would be a crucial step towards a coherent legislative framework in the European Union. However, no Sulphur Emission Control Area (SECA) of the kind established in the North and Baltic Seas, resulting in significantly improved air quality, has been introduced in the Mediterranean.
