The study is led by a national team of researchers from universities and university hospitals in Gothenburg, Linköping, Malmö, Stockholm, Uppsala and Umeå. SCAPIS, funded by the Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation, enrolled more than 30,000 men and women age 50 to 64 from the general population, of whom 25,182 with no known coronary disease were imaged using coronary CT angiography. Imaging was performed at six different universities, with each doing approximately 5,000 CT angiograms. The Swedish CArdioPulmonary BioImage Study (SCAPIS) was initiated as a major joint national effort in Sweden to reduce mortality and morbidity from cardiovascular disease (CVD), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and related metabolic disorders, all of which are important issues for public health. This study is the first report from SCAPIS, a collaborative project between six Swedish universities with the following vision statement: to "reduce the risk of cardiovascular and respiratory SCAPIS is the largest population study in Sweden within the cardiovascular and pulmonary system area. It is a world unique project that includes 30,000 patients and involves all six healthcare regions, university hospitals and a number of scientific players. SCAPIS is designed as a prospective observational study of a randomly selected sample from the general population. The examinations were selected on the basis of their ability to provide detailed phenotypic information on subclinical disease whilst at the same time being applicable for use in a large study population.
