In the field of special education, attrition plays a major role in a persistent teacher shortage problem. Over the past few decades, researchers in general education and special education have investigated the various reasons why new teachers leave the field and ways in which they can be better supported to stay in their positions.

Consequently, teachers’ perspectives have been a great concern in the academic field of inclusive education. In this research, the author classifies factors that influence teachers’ perspectives based on literature review by Avramidis & Norwich (2002) and 55 previous studies worldwide from the year 2000 to 2018.

The bottom line is that special education teachers will need to follow the process outlined by their states to demonstrate that they are "highly qualified" whether they are teaching students who all have the same disability or who have a variety of disabilities. Given the constantly evolving landscape of special education, there needs to be ongoing conversation on the topic between a broad range of experts, educators, parents, and students.
